The Dome

View from the central dome

  • The video The Dome uses subjective point of view shot. In this single-channel video projection we see how one explores an ambivalent inner architecture through the eye of the camera. The man behind the camera is wondering around almost empty space, undertaking an existentialist search that seems to discover nothing else but his own shadow and occasionally scattered dusty coat of arms of once existing state – Socialistic federal republic of Yugoslavia. The space however has a seductive character that is embodied in indifferent structure that disguises its monumental exterior and its most striking feature - the dome. And it is not just any dome; it belongs to the Parliament building that was built in the early beginnings of the 20th century. Its construction started when only the idea of Yugoslav state existed and later it served to 4 different countries that during XX century that carried on the idea of Yugoslavia (Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes1918–1943; Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia/The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia 1943–1992; The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia1992–2003; The State Union of Serbia and Montenegro 2003–2006). Nowadays, it is still in use by the Serbian parliament. The idea of Yugoslavia remained in the XX century, while its insignia were left in the dome. It conducts a visual autopsy that is confronting powerful aesthetics with its political potential.
